My grandfather was Paul Dolberry born in Halifax
NC. I have attended the Dolberry family reunion
that take place in Philadelphia. There is a
cousin named Columbus Dolberry in Philadelphia
that has traced the Dolberry back to Haiti.
There is no reunion this year.

Hi Sharon, was glad to get your message. My husband is from Norfolk Va. He was raised by his grandparents, both deceased at this time. His family is still in Norfolk and surrounding areas. Also some in Jersy, North Carolin. We are in So. Cal, but not together. Still friends however, and I know he would be glad to learn more.

I am always interested in how the Afican American Dolberrys acquired the name. As far as I can tell, my ancestors were too dirt poor to go into any of that "slaveholding" nonsense. But maybe I am deep down hoping to sidestep any "ancestral guilt". Anyway, we have traced the Dolberry name back to a young boy who stowed away on a ship from Ireland around 1820. (But strangely enough there is one sole Dolbery headstone in Massachusetts Bay colony from around 1700.

Regarding the Dolberry surname, one must understand that Dolberry is the Americanized name of Delaberre. The Delaberre family was primarily in slave trading and owed only a few handful of slaves. This family was based primarily out of Mass. and the lineage was French, not Irish.
As for Dolberry ancestory in Ireland, I understand that most black Dolberrys passed for white in the 1800 and 1900's. These Black Dolberrys claimed their lineage to be Irish instead of Black. Many of them relocated to California and up north. I'm a Black Doberry from Philadelphia and I have heard of "white" Dolberrys who have lived in the area of Philadelphia. They even owed a diner named "Dolberry's" that caught on fire in the 60's or 70's. A elderly lady in California called my uncle years ago and said the Dolberry side of her family moved from down South to California and that she was told as a little girl that they were passing for white. My family came up to Philadelphia from Oak City, NC around 1930 by way of my grandfather, Claude Dolberry.

My uncle is the person who has done most of this research, except for the story about the restaurant named "Dolberry's". The restaurant was burnt down and someone who worked with my work with my father in the Philadelphia Fire Department told him about the restaurant. In the archives, somewhere in Philadelphia, is where my uncle did most of his research. If you want, I can try to get him to contact you on the info that he has someway. He has been doing research on our family for many years.
He told me that the name switched for Delaberre to Dolberry when one of the sons in the slave trading family married a girl who was too "poor" for the family. The son was disowed because of his marriage and changed his name.
