Cannetti is my maiden name.
All I know is that my grandfather, Giovanni Cannetti, came to the US from Messina, Sicily. He was born on March 24, 1893. Died on April 4, 1951 (in NY).
His wife, my grandmother, was Carmela (don't know her maiden name). Also from Messina, She came to US approx. 1912. She was born on August 7, 1905 and died on April 16, 1979.
Giovanni Cannetti became a citizen and fought for US in WW1. He was a private in Company A, 302nd Supply Train, 77th Division (later known as the 77th Supply Battalion). They are both buried at the LI National Cemetary in Pinelawn, NY.

Looking through message board found your name spelled Cannetti. Our last name is spelled Canetti, also trying to search family origin. I know that my grandfather's father came from italy but i believe from the northern part. if you run across anything helpful please email. Also its ironic that my sister's name is Dianne Canetti.

Isn't that funny that your sister spells her FIRST name with two n's and her LAST name with one n and I do(did) just the opposite.
I haven't found out anything else, though.

hi uncle don

Uncle Don, my great grandfather was from Naples. That's about all I know, maybe you should try asking Grandpa Henry.

Hi Diane,

My great-grandfather was Antonio Cannetti, born June 27, 1878. I believe he may have been the brother of your grandfather. My Aunt told me that my Grandmother's (Josephine (Cannetti)Mattiello )cousin (Carmela, daughter of Maria) married Antonio's brother John and that John was buried at Pinelawn in Long Island. I know that Antonio's wife was named Agatha (I think she was the sister of Maria). Does this make ANY sense? I am doing a search and found out the name of Antonio Cannetti's parents, they were Domenico Cannetti and Angela (Fali) Cannetti. I know the people on my Grandmother's side came from Messina, so this would be more than a coincidence.

Greetings! Our Canetti family originated in Northern Italy, too. We have traced them back from Italy to Romania to Spain....specifically to a town called Canet in the Valencia region of Spain. The common thread was a jewish heritage, ie the name Canetti (in hebrew) means from the town of Canet. We are looking for others to contribute to this lineage. Also trying to find a connection with Kevin Bacon....just kidding!

More than coincidence for sure! My grandfather, Giovanni (John) Cannetti, is buried at Pinelawn, L.I. National Cemetary) with his wife, Carmela (Grasso) Cannetti. Giovanni's DOB is March 24, 1893 and he died on April 4, 1951. My grandmother's DOB is August 7, 1905 and she died on April 16, 1979 (23 years ago today, as a matter of fact). Today is also my father, John's birthday. He was born April 16, 1938. Giovanni and Carmela had 7 children together, I am not sure of the Italian names or the DOB's but they are --Angie, Domenick (who passed away this January), Agatino, Mary, Natalie, John and Pat.
I am getting a new email address, so I might not get messages from this board. My new email is-- It definetly sounds like we are from the same Cannettis. Please write me at my new email so we can compare more notes.

I am curious to know how you traced the Canetti name back so far. The only reason I knew about the town of Canete was from a biography I read on Elias Canetti upon his death.

What resources am I overlooking? I can only trace my family back to Turkey before their emigration to the US post-WWI. Any ideas would be appreciated.

My great aunt, Margherita Paisoli married Giovanni Canetti. He was born in 1871 and died March 22, 1941. I have no other information other than this which I obtained from Storo, Italy.
