Is your information on Francis Barteau's origin available? I have been trying for some time to find someone with solid proof of his Emmigration from France. I would appreciate any information you may have. My gg grandmother was Hattie Elizabeth Barto b 1845 Burlington VT. (I knew her.) I have pictures of her mother and father, her children and her husband in Sherman TX.

Dear Ms. Beck,

I have only two sources for most of the information I have on my father's family. One is a newspaper article written in the early 1900's in Long Island. The other was a Geneological Society study, under the name Bartoo or Bartow if I recall. I will dig out the photo copy of the study and the article and see what further verification they may lead to. I will get back to you soon.

My Francis Barteau sailed from Paris in 1642 and arrived in NY. His family were early settlers in Western Long Island and anglicized the name to Barto. I would love to know if you have any information.

It is obviously the same. He died in Flushing, Queens, New York. His wife was Mary (?) born in 1646 in Paris France. My direct ancestor was their son, John Born about 1670 in Paris.

I don't go further back than Francis. I was hoping to find someone who does. It would have to be the French connection.

Anything else I can do for you?

I have a Francois Barteau born in Paris abt 1637 came to New York abt 1657. He came with his whole family of abt 5 or 6 people and wife Mary and settled in Long Island. I have record of his emmigration taken from the Olive Branch . They show a lot of info abt him but do not show the ship he came on. I have not been able to get any info re: his parentage or any siblings. I know that there are a lot of Barteau's in France, it seems to be a fairly common name there. My line is decended from him through John Elizabeth / John Catherine / William / Thomas / Daniel / Raswell /Edmund/ Philip, my father and me.

You are my daughter's sixth cousin three times removed (on her father's side). Glad to know you!

Please tell me everything you know about Francis Barto. You can e-mail me at

My daughter descends through your William's brother, Benjamin.

Some day maybe we'll find Francis' parents.

My family geneology has some holes in it, but here goes:

Francis Barteau--
John Barto(1660)married Elizabeth--
Francis Barto (1711) married Mary Ketcham--Silas Bartoo (1742) married Ruth Luce--
Jesse Bartoo (1775)

I have 2 listings for Jesse, a Jesse Bartoo born 1775 and a Jesse Luce Bartoo born 1808. Perhaps Jesse Luce is the son of Jesse. Then my tree names a Eugene Bartoo born in New York on unknown date and drowned in Arkansas about 1890. He married Sarah Ward? Their son was Eddie Eugene Bartoo (1877) married Mary?--
Edward Eugene Bartoo (1910) married Lucy Edna Smith--
Kenneth Melvin Bartoo (1921) married Hazel Nadine Proctor--
Martin Edward Bartoo (1948) married Suzanne Wilkendorf--

please email me if any of this is familiar.

Count me in on this Barteau / Barto / Bartow / Bartoo family line. Some of us will be meeting on Long Island this May to trace the family roots from Francis in Flushing to Morris in the Revolution to Charles in the Civil War.

I look forward to sharing family history.
