ZIPFEL; lost at sea?

Am looking to figure out a so far unnamed ZIPFEL who died at sea, on immigration, best information was ~1870, siblings were from Saxony, however there does seem to be some sort of connection to a SPANHEIMER family, lines from both Bavaria and Wuerttemburg, Peter Spanheimer b. Alsace. In USA, both these Zipfel and Spanheimer families settled in Washington County, WI; Frank Zipfel, b ~1866 was a son of the lost man, his mother, unknown name, lived for 1 year after arrival in Wisconsin and died after that one year. Frank was adopted by cousin Emelia Fickler, who married Peter LEIENBERGER, of New York, Emelia being the daughter of Johanna Sophia Zipfel of Saxony. These Zipfels are also cousins of the Zipfels in Clark and Milwaukee counties, WI. I've noticed those postings re Ida Zipfel, etc; Strange coincidence also is that one of the other cousins' husband had relatives in Erie County, NY, as did Carl Zipfel, also an uncle to Frank as well; so some weird similarities with some of the other Zipfel's but might be nothing more than a coincidence.

Of course any help with leads for this Frank would be great, but also would like hints on how to find lists of names of those lost at sea; LDS records stop a few years earlier? Any other ideas where to search?
Thanks, Pam
