Irene R. Zelazny, 93, of Erie,Co,Pa,
passed away on August 31, 2011,
at St. Vincent Hospital.
She was born Dec. 25, 1917,
to the late Walter and Anna (Alamenciak) Rosinski.
Irene is the wife of Edward Zelazny.
They were married Nov. 27, 1941
and had been married for 69 years.
She is the mother of Rev. William P. Zelazny (Bill) of Providence, R.I. and Catherine Anne Zelazny (Cathi) of Erie, Pa.;
and sister of Walter L. Rosinski of Providence, R.I.
Irene graduated from East High School, Erie Business School, and attended Erie Conservatory of Music. She worked for the Pennsylvania Unemployment Office and was the first woman to work outside the office,
traveling throughout Erie County.
Later she worked for the Harborcreek School District as elementary library aide, working with the librarian to set up the library system for Klein, Clark, and Rolling Ridge schools. She loved to play tennis. Irene and her husband even built their own clay court. Throughout her life she played and taught piano. Irene served on the board of the International Institute, was PTA president, and Brownie troop leader. She was one of the organizers and instructors for the Erie Folk Dance group attending folk dance camps to learn and enjoy international folk dances. She taught Polish and Italian dances to groups in Erie and Cleveland. In her retirement, she traveled extensively. She was a lifetime member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) and enjoyed monthly luncheons with the retired secretarial women of Harborcreek School District. Irene collected bird figurines, folk art, and Armani statues. She loved nature, taking walks, reading, and attending concerts.
Irene was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Erie.PA,
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Northwestern PA Humane Society, Emmaus Soup Kitchen, and Neighborhood Art House. Friends may call at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory LLP, Pine Avenue Branch, 845 East 38th Street, Friday, September 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend a Service of Remembrance on Saturday, September 3, at 11 a.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 7180 Perry Hwy. Graveside services at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery will follow at 1 p.m.
