Steph, How many Zakrzewskis can there be?? (Tons, actually - mostly mid-west) My greatgrandfather was John (Jan?) Zakrezewski, married to Magdelena Matkiewicz. He was born in Russian Poland in June, 1854 - don't know where. He came to America (Jersey City) alone in 1879 and was followed in 1881 by his wife and 3 children. Four more children were born in J.C. during the 1880's, including my grandmother, Clementine.
Your Zakrzewskis came 25 years after him but were of the same age as my grandmother and the others born here. There was a brother, Eddie Zakrzewski, who was born into the family in 1885. I could never find him after that and have wondered if he had a family (or even survived).
According to the 1910 census, John & Maggie had moved to Long Island where he was a saloon keeper (!) and then a farmer. He died in 1930.
St. Anthony of Padua seems to have been the church of choice for many Polish immigrants and I have found some family records from there. Might be worth a look if you haven't already looked there.
Well, there's no obvious match up, but I don't believe that's the end of the story. Family usually followed family in the emigrations. Cousins maybe? Or is Zakrzewski the equivalent of Smith??
Regards, Tom
