Sir Name

Iglesias, Iglesia, Yglesias, De Iglesias, De La Iglesias

There are not a lot of information on this sir name, which is presumed very old and it's been traced to the times of the Godos.

It's considered a progenitor of the lineage of Don Alvar de Iglesias or De La Iglesias, a very fierce and persistence warrior that around the time of 725 A.D. When the invincible Don Pelayo reconquered the City of Leon, they faced an attack of the moors in a church that was called ( San Pedro de Cavatuenta ) and with only one hundred and fifty men, they defended and held on to the avalanche of five thousand moors. They fought with so much intensity that they killed two thousand moors, the moors seeing the ferocity of the one houndred and fifty Spaniards, retreated and never came back to the the city of Leon in Northern Africa. In memory of such event it made the Iglesias name powerful which in time fell back to the patriarch marquees of total. Other houses of the Iglesias lineage settled in the Mountain of Leon, while others were found in Galicia, in the valleys of the Canagas and in the fellowship of Santa Eulalia de Trugulfe, judicial party of Mondonedo, and another in the Villa of Torreiglesias of the party of Segovia and finally another in the Carrascosa de Arriba of the judicial party of Burgo de Osma.

Historical Characters

In November of 1524, Rodrigo Galvan de Bastidas, organized with the kings of Spain the exploration and colonization of the new lands. In those times it was very difficult to find sailors in Cuba, the reason being that Hernan Cortes took them to help him conquer Mexico. Nevertheless, Bastidas was able to find some ships eventhough they were not in very good shape, he and two hundred and forty men disembarked near the Venezuelan coast. In this group of conquistadors was Diego de Iglesias Gajarte, whose place of birth is not known, first of which this last name came to the Americas.
