A retired teacher, principal and supervisor of instruction in St. Helena Parish and a resident of Greensburg, he departed this life Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, at St. Helena Parish Hospital in Greensburg. He was 80. Visiting at Turner Chapel AME Church, 831 Turner Chapel Road, Greensburg, on Wednesday, Sept. 13, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with family hour from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visiting at the church on Thursday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Stanley J. Carter. Interment in Turner Chapel Church cemetery. Survived by his son, Gordon Yancy Jr. and wife Betty of Missouri City, Texas; and daughter, Sylvia Yancy Davis and husband Darryl of Alexandria; brother, Lester Yancy of Baton Rouge; sister, Audrey Yancy Harrison of Baton Rouge; three grandchildren; great-grandchild, five brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law and a host of other relatives and friends. He was a member of Turner Chapel AME Church, where he served as treasurer, class leader and steward; Retired Teacher's Association; Southern University Alumni; Prince Hall Mason Eagle Lodge 212; founding charter member of the SHPE Federal Credit Union; and a former school board member. He received his B.S. and M.Ed. degrees from Southern University in Baton Rouge. MJR Friendly Service Funeral Home Inc., Denham Springs, is in charge of arrangements.
