Melvin J. Yancey
Melvin J. Yancey of 804 Berry Hill Road,South Boston, died May 25 at the age of 79. He was born in Halifax County, on Feb. 10, 1933 to the late Willie Thornton Yancey and the late Lottie Thomas Yancey.
He was a retired truck driver for Burlington Ind. and was a member of Glenwood Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Natalie May Yancey of South Boston; two daughters, Maxine Y. Coleman of Madison Heights and Lisa Yancey McNeil and husband, Steven of Zebulon, N.C.; two sons, Christopher Ray Yancey and wife, Bobbie of Evington and Jay Thornton Yancey and wife, Melinda of Forrest; daughter-in-law, Judy Yancey of Amherst; step daughter, Lenora Garabedan and husband Ed of West Chester, Pa.; two step sons, Kevin Rydzewski and wife, Kim of Nottingham, N.H. and Darrin Rydzewski and wife, Melissa of Alexandria, Ky.; sister, Eunice Y. Slayton of Vernon Hill; 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Melvin Jackson Yancey Jr., a step daughter, Dorene Monroe, two sisters, Virginia Harris and Frances Brown, a brother, Luther B. Yancey, and a granddaughter, Teresa Wright.
Funeral services were held May 27 at Glenwood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Woodfin officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
