Mattie Crawford Hanger Yancey

Mrs. Mattie C. Yancey, wife of Mr. Thomas J. Yancey, the well known grocery merchant, died at her home on Pine street, on Monday morning about 9:30 o'clock. She had been in poor health for several years but her last illness was only of about two weeks duration. Before her marriage she was Miss Mattie Crawford Hanger, member of the well known Hanger family, of Augusta county, and a niece of the late Dr. Hanger, Fishersville, and Major Marshall Hanger of Staunton. Mrs. Yancey was 68 years of age and is survived by two brothers, Messrs. George and Leck Hanger, of Charlotte, N. C., both of whom were present at the funeral. She is also survived by her husband and three children, Mr. Charles P. Yancey, Cashier of the Waynesboro National Bank, Mr. Henry Yancey, of Charlottesville and Miss Annie Yancey, of this place. Interment was at 3 o'clock at the Old Stone Church, where members of her family are buried. A brief funeral service was held at the grave, conducted by Rev. Mr. Bobbitt, pastor of the Methodist Church here, of which Mrs. Yancey was a faithful, useful member. A number of prominent citizens of Waynesboro attended the funeral, going by auto, to Ft. Defiance.
