Mary Ann Yancey Sipe
EARLYSVILLE - Mary Ann Yancey Sipe of Earlysville, Va., passed away Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va. Mrs. Sipe, daughter of the late Dr. Burbridge Scott Yancey and Esther Dodson Yancey, was born in Richmond, Va., on Aug. 8, 1928. She resided in Newport News, Va., for 31 years and in Albemarle County for the past 14 years. Mrs. Sipe graduated from Hollins College in 1950, where she served as President of Student Government her senior year. During her lifetime, Mrs. Sipe was active in The Junior League, local and state Garden Clubs, The Daughters of the American Revolution, The Episcopal Church, the University of Virginia Symphony Orchestra, and the Hollins College Alumnae Association. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Elisabeth Susan Sipe, and her sisters, Betty Scott Yancey Wash and Julia Reid Yancey Soyars. Mrs. Sipe is survived by her husband of 56 years, Dr. William Henry Sipe; three children, William Henry Sipe III of Rock Hill, S.C., Mary Hedley Sipe Gunther of Richmond, Va., and Charles Yancey Sipe of Charlottesville, Va.; seven grandchildren, William Henry Sipe IV, Charles Yancey Sipe Jr., Edie Garland Bethke, William Harrison Burton, Landon Clark Sipe, Ann Carter Sipe and Chloe Elisabeth Sipe. A graveside funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Woodbine Cemetery in Harrisonburg, Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at The University of Virginia Medical Center, Attn: Kathleen Jinenez, Box 801024, Charlottesville, VA 22908, or to a charity of choice. The Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg is handling arrangements.
