John W. Yancey, Jr., 79, of Sandy Springs, GA, drew his last earthly breath and returned to the love of his heavenly Father on October 7, 2011. He is survived by his wife Joyce Suttles Yancey, son Carlton Yancey, daughter Claire Kelly, sister Valencia Echendia, stepchildren Lynn Odom Hampton, Steve Odom and Jenny Odom, eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren and five nephews. He is predeceased by his father John Wesley Yancey, his mother Abuela Honour Yancey and his niece Laura Ann Enchendia Halma. John was born on September 1, 1932 in Atlanta, GA. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1953 at Fort Benning, GA. He proudly served his country in the Korean War where he completed 12 jumps as a paratrooper and also served as a member of the military police. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the UN Service Ribbon and the Parachutist Badge. After he was honorably discharged in 1955 with the rank of 1st Lieutenant, John attended Columbia University on the GI Bill where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1963. He spent his career at Swiss Re America where he rose to vice president until his retirement in 1992. John married Joyce who was the love of his life on February 12, 1997 in the United Nations Chapel in New York, NY. Singing together at McKinnon's, praying together at Sardis, taking care of one another, living life side by side and hand in hand, their thirteen and a half years together were the best of his life. John loved being a member of the Sardis church along with Joyce and singing together with her in the choir. He also enjoyed producing musical shows for himself and his friends at McKinnon's, completing the daily crossword puzzle and had a talent for illustrative and architectural drawing. There will be a visitation on Monday, October 10 from 3-5pm at Sandy Springs Chapel, 136 Mt. Vernon Highway, Sandy Springs, GA, 30328 404-255-8511. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 11 at 11am in Sardis United Methodist Church, 3725 Powers Ferry Rd NW, Atlanta, GA 30342 404-237-6060. Interment will follow in Arlington Memorial Park. The casket will be open for viewing at 10am. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in John's name to Sardis United Methodist Church.
