Estella 'Mama' Yancey, 90 a Chicago blues fans' favorite: - May 6, 1986
Estella "Mama" Yancey, a longtime favorite on the Chicago blues scene, died Sunday night. She was 90.
Born in Cairo, Ill., she married boogie-woogie pianist Jimmy Yancey in Chicago in 1917. She began singing with her husband and recorded a series of blues classics with him beginning in 1943. She handled his business affairs until his death in 1951.
Later, she recorded with acclaimed Chicago pianists such as Little Brother Montgomery and Art Hodes.
In more recent years, she performed and recorded with pianist Erwin Helfer, and appearances by the two were an annual highlight at the University of Chicago Folk Festival.
Services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Golden Gate Funeral Home, 2036 W. 79th St. Visitation will precede the services at 6 p.m.
