FAIRMONT — Richard Yancy, at the age of 88, departed this life early Sunday morning (Oct. 16, 2011) at the Arbors at Fairmont Nursing Facility. He died peacefully in his sleep from cancer.
He was born March 4, 1923 in Clarksville, Va., the son of the late Kissie Yancy and Jesse Chavis.
His adult life was filled with carpentry work, which he loved. He was self-employed until he moved to West Virginia and retired. He lived a good life.
Survivors include his wife, Carrie “Susie” Yancey of Carolina; one son, Derrick Wilkerson; one daughter, Shirley Louise Huffington; two stepsons, Idris Muhammad of East Orange, N.J., and Tracey Darryl Claybrook of Carolina; his mother-in-law, Othalean Thomas, and one sister-in-law, Betty Goldson, both of Carolina; three step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Rosa Brown of Prinston, N.J., and Lucille Hopkins of Clarksville, Va.; and several other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepson, Derrick Claybrook.
The family will receive friends at JG Lampkin Funeral Home from 1-2 p.m. Friday. A memorial service will be held in the funeral home at 2 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Charles Miller officiating. He chose cremation as his final disposition.
