A 40-year-old New Orleans man who spent most of his adult life in prison was gunned down early Tuesday in Treme after getting into an argument with another person, New Orleans police said.

Checo Yancy Jr. was shot just before 3 a.m. in the 2400 block of Dumaine Street, authorities said.

Officers responding to the scene found Yancy lying on the sidewalk, where paramedics pronounced him dead. He died of several gunshot wounds to the chest, said John Gagliano, chief investigator for the Orleans Parish coroner's office.

While police were working to identify a motive for the shooting, investigators said Yancy and his killer were in some sort of argument before gunshots rang out. Police did not immediately have any information on the suspect.

Yancy was convicted of rape in 1990 for an attack the previous year, in which he accosted a woman on the street and raped her in the backyard of a house on North Miro Street.

A short time later, Yancy raped the woman a second time in an abandoned apartment. He served a 19-year term in state prison before being released in August 2009, according to a spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections.

Homicide Detective Jeffrey Vappie is in charge of the murder investigation.
