CHICKAMAUGA Charles Burnell Yancey, 82, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, June 8, 2011.He was born in Dekalb County, Ala., but had lived in the Chickamauga area for most of his life and was a member of Pilgrim Way Baptist Church in Chickamauga. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, where he served in Okinawa, Japan with the 524th Military Police Company. He retired from Dan River in 1985 after more than 25 years of service and enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was an avid Alabama football fan, loved Coach Bear Bryant and enjoyed Atlanta Braves baseball. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who will be sadly missed by all that knew him.He was preceded in death by his sister, Burma Yancey; and stepsister, Mageline Zerbe.Survivors include his loving wife of more than 61 years, Ruth Overby Yancey, Chickamauga; sons and daughters-in-law, David (Judy) Yancey, Rossville, William (Ann) Yancey, Chickamauga, Curtis (Faye) Yancey, Harrison, and Michael Yancey, Chickamauga; daughters and sons-in-law, Pat (Gary) Strickland, Joan (Calvin) Hale and Kim (Mike) Angel, all of Chickamauga, Ga.; stepsister, Opal Fay Woody, Winston Salem, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; Thank You, Taylor, his little sweetheart, for your love and care of your Pawpaw and numerous friends and relatives that he adored.Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, June 10, 2011, in the Fort Oglethorpe Chapel.Burial will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
