John William Yancey, 90, Hernando, died Monday, May 30, 2011, under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Citrus County.
A funeral service of remembrance will be held on Friday, June 3, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home. The family will receive friends in visitation from noon until the hour of service. Burial will follow at the Florida National Cemetery with military honors from VFW Post No. 4337 of Inverness.
John was born on July 28, 1920, in Helena, GA, to William and Willie (Tweedell) Yancey. He served our country in the U.S. Army during WWII, achieving the rank of first sergeant at the age of 21. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received a Purple Heart for his injuries received during that combat period. John worked as a plant supervisor for GTE for over 37 years. He retired to Inverness to enjoy fishing. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Hernando.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Hazel of Hernando; son, John L. Yancey and his wife Roberta and daughter, Karen Marie Smith and her husband Walter, all of St. Petersburg, FL; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. The family requests donations to First Baptist Church of Hernando, P.O. Box 433, Hernando, FL 34442 in John's memory.
