COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA - Funeral services for John Allen “Buddy” Yancey, 81, will be held 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Riverland Hills Baptist Church. Officiating will be Dr. Ed Carney. Burial will be held at Woodridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel, 5400 Bush River Road. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Gideons International, Irmo Camp, P.O. Box 210263, Columbia, SC 29221-0263.

Mr. Yancey, beloved husband of Juanita Tuck Yancey, passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2011. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and dearly loved his family. Born on January 18, 1930, in Halifax County, VA, he was the son of the late John Allen Yancey, Sr. and Maude Thaxton Yancey Bane. He was a teacher and coach in North Carolina for 12 years at Youngsville High School, Massey Hill High School and South Granville High School. Many of his former ball players still call him “Coach” today. He worked with Horace Mann Insurance Company for 31 years serving as Regional Vice President in charge of sales for the eastern region. For the last 25 years Mr. Yancey volunteered with The Gideons International of Irmo, SC to provide Bibles to the Central Midlands and to recruit new Gideons into service for God’s glory. He served as a deacon and was a member and former teacher of the Friendship Class of Riverland Hills Baptist Church.

Mr. Yancey was a graduate of C.H. Friend High School class of 1948 (South Boston, VA). He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950-54. He attended the University of Richmond and was a graduate of Catawba College, Salisbury, NC. He received his Master’s Degree from East Carolina University. He was a member of the SC Senior Olympic team for basketball where his team won the silver medal in 1996. He was inducted in the Halifax County Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. He was an avid golfer and played with The Tuesday Group of Golfers as well as the Old Guard Golf Group of Coldstream. He loved to tell his children and grandchildren stories of his growing up and they loved to hear them.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 56 years, Juanita Yancey; daughter, Sharon White (James) of Lugoff; son, David Yancey (Barbara) of Little River; and daughter, Laura Jones (Doug) of James Island. Five beautiful grandchildren, Jonathan White (Meg) of Atlanta, GA; Zachary White (Jennifer) of West Columbia, SC; Liz McCarthy (Chas) of Washington, D.C., Justin Yancey (Jael) of Little River, SC, Ashlei Yancey of Little River, SC. One sweet great-grandchild, Madelyn Amelia White of West Columbia, SC and an expected great-granddaughter to be born in July to Jonathan and Meg, as well as his dogs, Cid and Cricket. He is much loved and will be missed.
