Gastonia, NC Howard Buren Yancey, Jr., 67, died Saturday, August 28. Born September 27, 1942 in Gastonia, he was the son of Howard B. and Ruth Yancey. He attended North Carolina State University and graduated from Belmont Abbey College with a degree in Sociology. He began working during summers as a teenager at Southern Reneedling Works, a family business, and retired as Vice President and General Manager. Known by loved ones as Buddy, he was active in the Gastonia Skeet Club, and won many state and national championships in skeet shooting; he retired the North Carolina 12-gauge trophy, among numerous other honors. Buddy was a person of words and great intellectual curiosity; he is remembered fondly for his excellent amateur cartoons, interest in group behavior, and once undertaking to read the dictionary cover to cover. He was an irreverent social critic who held forth on a variety of topics when he had an informal audience with family. He enjoyed spending time on the computer, and was generous with his daughters. He will be remembered as a constant voice reminding them to be careful. They will. He is survived by his wife, Ann Rivers Yancey; two daughters, Ann Judith Yancey of Brooklyn, NY and Elizabeth Hope Yancey of Charlotte; his son-in-law, Brian Parry of Charlotte; his mother, Ruth B. Yancey of Gastonia; his sister, Donna Yancey Dellinger of Gastonia; and his brother-in-law, Bobby Dellinger of Gastonia.
