Garmon Doyle Yancey, 77, of Fort Smith died on Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, in a local hospital. He was a retired clerk for the U.S. Postal Service, a member of First Lutheran Church and a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War, in which he served as a medic. He was born in Fort Smith but was raised in Van Buren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis and Erna Yancey, and his brothers and sisters, Dorothy Albright, Ellis Yancey Jr., Reba Whitsett, Norma Dutton and Danny Yancey.
Services are 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 2009, at First Lutheran Church of Fort Smith. Burial with military honors to follow at U.S. National Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Betty Lou of the home; one daughter, Lori Lee and her husband Jeff of Fort Smith; one son, Keith Yancey of Alma; five grandchildren, Landon, Logan, Seth, and twins Carson and Grayson Lee, all of Fort Smith; two sisters, Linda Reding and her husband Mark of Greenwood and Ima Killion of Fresno, Calif.; and one brother, Jerald Yancey and his wife Joan of Van Buren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Riley and David Whitsett, Brian, Eric and John Reding, Mike and Larry Yancey, Greg Harvey and Landon Lee.
Honorary pallbearers are Ronnie Dawson, Jack Howerton, Don Moon, Victor Manchaca, Ray Ussery and Boyce Mahoney.
The family will visit with friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. at Ocker-Putman Funeral Home, 4500 Jenny Lind, Fort Smith.
