From Family Records - written about 1936.
Leighton Yancey - son of Robert and Phoebe Yancey was born 1798, died 1888 - married Jane Scott - born 1798 and died 1879. When they came to [Howard County] Missouri like all pioneers they sought a building spot near a stream or spring. They located near a very large spring and built a two story log house with timbers hewn from their own forest. That spring today is still flowing freely (1936). With the help of a family of slaves he tilled the soil and mastered the hardships of a pioneer. After the Civil War the old negros still lived on with "Old Mostah" whom they loved and worshiped. A kind and loveable man - alwyas true to family and friends - he lived to the ripe old age of 90 yeras. There were twelve* children born to Leighton and Jane:
Alfred, Jerry, Joel & Evan (twins), Robert, Charles Squire, Henry, Leighton, Mildred, Margaret, Jane, Elizabeth. All are dead (1936).
*DJY: other records seem to indicate an additional child: James M. born about 1823 and dying about 1850.
