STEVE L. YANCY
Stevie Louie Yancy was born on June 4, 1919 at the family farm near Coleman, Texas. His mother was Linnie Bea Hicks Yancy and his father Steve Andrew Yancy. Stevie Louie (family usually called him Louie, others called him Steve) had one brother and four Clifton Andrew, Ila Bea, Janie Lou, Frankie Lois, and Dorothy Ellen.
Steve attended Watts Creek and Junction Schools in the lower grades and then Coleman High School where he participated in Track and Football, graduating from Coleman High School in 1937.
After graduation, Steve went to Sweeney Diesel Engine School in Dallas, Texas and after completing the courses was employed by Terry Dalehite Towing out of Texas City, Texas. He was soon drafted, joined the Navy and was sent to San Diego, California in June 4, 1941. He then went to Aviation Machinist Mate School in Alameda, California. While there he met Esther Monthy from Iowa.
In January 1942 his unit was rushed to Hawaii where he flew in Navy PBY planes. In 1943 they were sent to Guadalcanal with the first B-24 Navy Bombers to join the World War II conflict and received the Navy Flying Cross. He returned to Alameda California in September 1943 and went to Cresco, Iowa to marry Esther Monthy on October 2-, 1943.
Then to duty in San Diego, and from there to Hutchinson, Kansas.
Their son Richard Alan was born there. In September 1945, after Navy discharge, the family moved to Houston, Texas here three more children were born Linda Susan Banks, Roger Ashley and Ellen Stephanie Smith.
He attended the University of Houston and then worked at Oilfield Service Company, Harry Baker Towing Company, Applied Power Company, and Southline Equipment.
In October 1984 Steve and his wife Esther retired in East Texas. to their special place at Lake Striker.
Esther Monthy Yancy was born October 9, 1921 on a farm near Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. Her parents were Olive Richards Monthy and A. Emil Monthy. Her brother Elvin was born here also. In 1924 they returned to her grandmother Elnora Noble Richard's farm just north of Cresco, Iowa. Her brother Floyd was born here.
Esther started first grade at Albion School. In November of that year the family moved to Cresco, Iowa where she attended school and graduated in the Class of 1939. In July of 1941 she went to Oakland, California where she was employed at Bay Cities Asbestos Company. She met Steve Yancy,. a handsome Navy man from Texas. When he returned from overseas Navy duty they married at Cresco, Iowa on October 2, 1943. Their children are Richard Alan, Linda Susan Banks, Roger Ashley and E. Stephanie Smith.
The Yancy family lived in Houston, Texas for 38 years. They attended Park Place United Methodist Church. Esther also work with Girl Scouts, was employed for 14 years at W. H. Curtain Co.
