CHARLES D. YANCEY SR.
The Rev. Charles Davidson Yancey Sr., 79, of Crawford Parkway died Feb. 16, 1997, in Lake Taylor Hospital, Norfolk.
He was a native of Malden, W.Va., and a member, pastor and founder of Temple Eternal, Portsmouth. He was founder and president of Freewill Industrial Charity and Exchange Inc., founder of the Home for Christ Foundation, board member of Humanitarian Industrial and Rehabilitation Enterprises of Washington, D.C.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude E. Yancey; four daughters, Mary Y. Robinson of Portsmouth, Beatrice Y. Smith of Fort Washington, Md., A. Rita Y. Johnson of Hillcrest Heights, Md., and Divina L. Yancey of Hunt Valley, Md.; four sons, the Rev. Charles D. Yancey II of Virginia Beach, the Rev. Joseph H. Yancey of Portsmouth, the Rev. Crystal P. Yancey of New Carrollton, Md., and the Rev. Gilbert C. Yancey of Oxon Hill, Md.; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives, in-laws and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Friday in Ebenezer Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Revs. Wayne M. Robinson and the Rev. Ben A. Beamer Sr. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at noon Thursday. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Friday. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
