I am trying to find out more information about an Eleanor Wenban who lived in the area around Tunbridge Wells, Kent
in the beginning of the 19th century.
On 10 June 1815 Eleanor's child Stephen was baptised at
Speldhurst Parish Church, Kent. A year later on November
16 1816 she married a John Pocock at Ashurst Parish Church, Kent.
I believe that that this child Stephen Wenban/Pocock was my great great grandfather. In his marriage certificate Stephen Pocock says his father is John a yeoman. I have found a John Pocock between 1794 and 1800 being a tenant of a Mr Dudgeon at Tonbridge,Kent.
In the 1851 census Stephen says he was born at Tunbridge Wells. Speldhurst is very close to Tunbridge Wells.
Stephen married a Mary Avis in 1844 and two of their children were called Eleanor and John my great grandfather.
Stephen and many of his male children and grand children worked for the firm of Duke and Sons who made cricket balls and bats. The firm was based at Chiddingstone Causeway not far from the modern railway station of Penshurst. Some of my family lived at the nearby hamlet of Charcott. These places are just to the west of Tonbridge, Kent.
I have also discovered recently a Wenbans farm near Wadhurst in Sussex which is not far from Tunbridge Wells.
If anyone has any information I would be very pleased to hear from them.
