How sad I am to pass along the news that we have lost our dear friend and avid WANDS researcher, Larry House of New York. For so many years, Larry persistently researched all WANDS families (as well as other family lines) in America, and made it possible for so many of us to uncover our Wands family history. His generosity in sharing his research, without charge, is unsurprassed. With his wife Lori's permission, I am posting Larry's obituary below, and hope that as many of us as possible can honor him by donating to the Civil War Preservation Trust, per his request:

Wayne Lawrence (Larry) House, 57, of Wynantskill died Wednesday, March 16, 2005 after battling colorectal cancer for nearly three years.

Born in Albany June 22, 1947, he was the son of Charles H. and Merilyn L. Heeder House. Larry grew up in East Greenbush and was a graduate of Columbia High School, Hudson Valley Community College and SUNY Albany.

He worked for the State of New York, spending 25 years of which as an employee of the Office of the State Comptroller, Division of Municipal Affairs, until his retirement in 2002. Larry had a lifelong love of history, especially military history, and did extensive research on numerous topics. He was an avid genealogy buff for over 12 years, working on a variety of family histories up until the time of his death.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Lori DuBois of Wynantskill, a son, Alexander C. House of Troy, a previous wife, Rifka (Erica) House of Delmar, one brother, Leigh S. House and his wife Gloria, of Los Alamos, NM, nephews Geoffrey and Brian House of Los Alamos, his favorite cousin, Ron Lee of Schenectady, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws and friends. Uncle Larry also leaves behind two special young ladies in his life, "nieces" Chelsey Wagar of Pittstown and Georgie Almon of Washington DC, as well as his "nephews" Ray Wagar of Valley Falls and Dan Wagar of Brunswick

The family extends thanks to all those who kept Larry in their thoughts and prayers during his illness. Special thanks to Dr. Nini Wu and the entire staff at NY Oncology and Hematology for their exceptional care during his illness, and to the staff of Community Hospice of Rensselaer County - especially Pat, Fran, Don Paul and Tony - for their care, guidance and expertise as Larry approached death.

A grave side service will be held Saturday, March 19th at 11AM at Oakwood Cemetery, Troy NY. Mourners should use the Oakwood Avenue gate of the cemetery.

Larry requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Civil War Preservation Trust, PO Box 1477, Hagerstown MD 21741, to the Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd, Rensselaer NY 12144, or to their local animal shelter, historical society or library.
