I am interested in the Walker Family of Pike and Crenshaw Counties in southeastern Alabama, in particular the family and descendants of Newton Walker, b. ca 1820 in Georgia who married Eliza Balkins. Their children:
1) James Walker, b. 1846
2) Joshuwa Jasper Walker, b. 1848, married 1) Mary A. E. Lee, and 2) Sara A. unknown maiden name
3) John Walker, b. 1850
4) William Walker, b. 1858
5) Franklin Walker, b. 1863

2) Joshuwa Jasper Walker and his first wife, Mary A. E. Lee had children that I know of:
Sarah Walker, b. 1869
Viola M., b. January 1870, married 1) Willie Sims and 2) Samuel James Bolling (various spellings)
James, b. 1876
Josephine, b. 1877, married Samuel James Bolling (same as above)
John B., b 1880
Newton Joshua, b. 1888, married 1) Alice E. J. Parish\ Parrish and 2) Mary Elizabeth Layton. Newton and Alice’s children:
John William Frank Walker, b. 1912, married Rosa Lee Sims (my aunt and uncle)
James Thomas, b. 1915
Leander, b. 1917
Josephine, b. 1920
Ola, b. 1924

4) William Walker is a big question for me. I have several censuses, an authorization written by him for permission for his 15 year old daughter to marry. My question/problem which I hope a researcher can help me with is this: I have a William listed as plain William and also as William H. Their birthdates on census indicate one being born (William Walker (no initial here) on 5 December 1858 in Shellhorn, Pike County, Alabama, d. 31 December 1928 in Ansley, Pike County, Alabama. His death record bears this out.

Then I have a William H. Walker, b. December 1848, 1900 Mitchells, Pike County, Alabama bear this out. He is shown with wife Nancy L. in 1900 but in 1910 (same locations) he still says that he is married, but there is no wife listed. On the 1900 Mitchells, Pike County, Alabama census William H. Walker, b. December 1848, it shows that he is the father of James F., Andrew S., and Georgia A. who I believe is my paternal grandmother.

Viola M., child of 2) Joshuwa Jasper Walker and his first wife, Mary A. E. Lee, is shown on the 1900 Pike County, Alabama census with her first husband, Willie Sims, b. 1877 and she says that they have been married 6 years (1904)

1900 Indian Branch, Precinct 15, Pike County, Alabama Census
Sims, Willie, head, 23, b. February 1877, married 6 years, b. Alabama
Viola M., 30, wife, January or June 18701, married 6 years, 1 child born, none living
Walker, Newton, 10, Brother-in-law, August 1889, b. Alabama

By 1910, she is back in her father’s home (listed as Loshuwa J. Walker) as Viola M. Suins and underneath it says, Viola M. Sims and Viola M. Walker and it says that she is a widow so that means that Willie would have died by or before 1910.

I also notice that so many of the Walker’s married Lee’s. Is there a family connection there? I can’t help but think so.

The Walker and Sims family of these counties in Southeastern Alabama share many marriages and also with another surname Bolling/Bolden/Boldin. Does anyone know who this Willie Sims is...who his parents or siblings were/are, or anything about him?

I have much verified information that I am willing to share with anyone researching these families and I hope to hear from someone soon. Please email me at
