Why did your grandmother did not speak Bohemian and German if she was born in Cheb, [Bohemia]Czech Republic? Her sister-in-law did not speak Russian but Ruthenian as most likely she was Byzantine Catholic.

The Czech and Slovak alphabet does not have a W but the V is a sound of an English W. So the VAJDA in old country becomes whatever works for the ancestor in the new country. The Polish alphabet has no V only W.
