Zachary J. Vlahos

Zachary J. Vlahos, 79, of Greensburg, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, in Redstone Highlands, Greensburg. He was born April 14, 1932, in Sharon, the son of the late Louis and Mary (Katsas) Vlahos. Zachary received his bachelor's degree from Bethany College, his master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh and did advanced study at Columbia University. He also served in the Navy from 1955 to 1957. Zachary had a 41-year career at the Kiski School in Saltsburg where he taught history, served as the chairman of the History Department and was also the director of development and alumni affairs. Fondly referred to as the ultimate schoolmaster, he had been involved in most of the jobs that the Kiski School had to offer. In addition to being an outstanding classroom teacher, over the years he coached baseball, tennis, swimming, football and basketball. A campus dormitory, Vlahos Hall, was named in his honor. He was a member of the Latrobe Presbyterian Church and a volunteer for the Greensburg Hempfield Area Library. He enjoyed history, reading, sports and spending time with his family, especially on their annual summer vacations in Ocean City, N.J. He is survived by his wife of more than 53 years, Mary (Wagner) Vlahos; three daughters, Mary Grace Muster and her husband, Marcus, of Saltsburg, Anne Zachara and her husband, Michael, of Summit, N.J., and Stephanie Vlahos, of Huntington, W.Va.;, and five grandchildren, Danielle and Zachary Muster, and Nicholas, Isabel and Sophie Zachara. Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in the HARTMAN-GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 1500 Ligonier St., Latrobe. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Unity Chapel, Unity Township, with his pastor, the Rev. Clark R. Kerr, officiating. Please meet the family at Unity Chapel.
