Charles, son of Edward H Vize and Anne (nee Tomlinson) was born on 7th July 1864 and died on 12th January 1938. He married Mary J Gilmour (or Gilmore)on 2nd November 1888, and they had seven children: Alfred Edward (dob 10/10/1889); Florence (Mrs Ebbs - dob 8/6/1891); William (dob 17/6/1892); Cecil; Ethel (Mrs Keating); Eileen Patricia (Mrs Byrne); John (dob 2/7/1937). The family resided at 9 Curzon St, in the Fairview District of Dublin where Charles was an insurance clerk (also a factory inspector and society agent). They worshipped in the Church of Ireland, which is part of the Anglican Communion.

Charles and Mary's son, William, crossed the Irish Sea to Greenock, Scotland in search of work. He fell in love with an Irish girl named Elizabeth MacFie (dob 28/6/1893), married her in Greenock and later settled in Port Glasgow where they raised their family. They worshipped in the Church of Scotland, which is the mother church of Presbyterianism. Most of William and Elizabeth's descendants remain in the Port Glasgow area.

Another son of Charles and Mary, Cecil, also crossed the Irish Sea. He settled in London, England, and married May. They had one child, a son, who married and set up home in Chester, England. The last we heard was Cecil and May had two grandsons in Chester.

Alfred Edward, also a son of Charles and Mary, fell in love with an Irish girl, Bridget (aka Della). He married in the Roman Catholic Church, retaining his own Anglican faith, but signed his agreement to any future offspring being raised in the Catholic Church. He emigrated to the USA in 1925 with Della and their son John (aka Jack) following him across the Atlantic a year later. The family settled in New York and had two more children, Theresa and Alfred M (aka Al). Later, Theresa and her family settled in New Hampshire, whereas the others remained in New York. Al, who is the sole survivor of his generation in that line, retired in 1993 from the New York Police Dept and relocated with his wife to Florida. His father, Alfred Edward, is buried in an RC cemetery run by the Archdiocese Of New York.

This biography was posted by William Vize of Scotland. His second cousins, Kathleen Schoendorf (nee Vize) and Clare Cohen (nee Vize) of New York and Kathleen's father, Alfred M Vize, provided input on the American side of the family. William, Kathleen and Clare are great-grandchildren of the late Charles and Mary Vize of Dublin.

Maj. Gen. John A Vize, of Ireland, who was Force Commander of the UN Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission, has traced the family tree back to Joseph and Abigail Vize of Limerick Ireland. I believe the Maj. General's father was a cousin of Charles O'Donnell Vize. I have to recheck this on the family tree.
