I am hoping to make contact with any surviving descendants of Walter Ernest TUFFS (son of Walter Ernest TUFFS, elder brother of Albert Charles TUFFS), who married Jane Constance GOSSELIN (born 19 March 1887, Jersey, daughter of Auguste Jean Gosselin and his wife Jane Sophie Le Breton) at St. Luke's Church on the British Channel Island of Jersey on 10th December 1906. My paternal grandfather was one of Jane's elder brothers and I suspect that the Jersey branch of the family lost touch with her after she moved to London in the 1920's. I have so far managed to discover the following six birth registrations from that marriage, five of them in Jersey (parish of St Clement) and the last one in Lambeth, London:
21 February 1907: Winifred Jane TUFFS;
07 December 1908: Evelyn May TUFFS;
19 June 1910: Walter Charles TUFFS;
07 June 1913: Charles Francis TUFFS;
26 September 1917: Jane Olive Maud TUFFS;
Probably 04 December 1922: Beatrice Olive TUFFS (Lambeth, London, Vol. No: 1D/ Page No: 446).
Despite having been resident in Jersey for the births of their three youngest children, the family (Walter, Jane, Winifred, Evelyn and Walter jnr) appear on the 1911 UK census at an address in Pimlico, St George district, London, close to the home of Walter's mother, father and brother at that time. Some time after that, they obviously returned to Jersey, where Walter became a railway employee and two more children were born (Charles in 1913 and Jane in 1917). I believe that during the First World War, Walter served with the 1st East Surrey Regiment (according to the details on his daughter Jane's 1917 birth certificate). I believe that he had also earlier served (from 1903) with the 3rd Battalion East Surrey Regiment 31st and 70th Foot, which may have been how he came to end up visiting Jersey (was he stationed there?).
After the end of the First World War, the Tuffs settled in London, where I note the birth of another daughter, Beatrice, in 1922. Throughout the 1920's, the couple's names appear on the London electoral registers for Lambeth, and from 1930 onwards, they are registered in the Norwood and North district, together with daughter Evelyn (until 1932), daughter Winifred (until 1939) and son Walter (until 1933). For the years 1937-39, they are registered in the Brixton and Kennington and Kennington districts, with daughter Jane's name being included for the first time on the 1939 register.
Sadly, I have discovered the following death registration in the Jan-Mar quarter of 1940 at Lambeth, London:
Jane C. Tuffs, age 52 years (Vol. No: 1D/ Page No: 408).
As for the children, my research of the UK BMD indexes has brought to light the following information:
Winifred Jane: I have found a marriage between Winifred J. Tuffs and Albert C. Franklin at Croydon, Surrey in 1960. I have also found the death of Winifred Jane Franklin registered in December 1990 at Croydon (Vol. No: 11/ Page No: 1666/ Reg. No: 1290). The death registration confirms her date of birth as 21 February 1907, so I am sure this is the eldest daughter of Walter and Jane Tuffs. However, as I cannot find details of any marriage in her name earlier than 1960, my presumption is that she had no children.
Evelyn May: I have found two marriages in the name of Evelyn M. Tuffs- the first was to Ernest A. M. Schumacher at Lambeth in 1933 and the second was to Francis W. Seymour at Swindon in 1964. However, I do not know if any children were born of those marriages and I haven't managed to find details of Evelyn's death.
Walter Charles: I have found a marriage between Walter C. Tuffs and Jean M. Smith in 1934 at Camberwell, London. I have also discovered details of a burial at Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney, NSW, Australia for Walter C. Tuffs, who died aged 72 years on 26 September 1982. His age matches that of the eldest son of Walter and Jane, so did he emigrate to Australia with his family?
Charles Francis: So far I have been unable to find any positive leads about what happened to him. I have not ruled out the possibility that he died in infancy.
Jane Olive Maud: I have found the following two marriages in the name of Jane O. M. Tuffs- the first was in 1940 at Lambeth to Kenneth Barnes, and the second was in 1951 at Brighton, Sussex to Frederick T. Baldy. I believe that this second marriage produced a daughter called Jayne V. Baldy, and that Jayne (the daughter) later married a man with the surname of Henderson in Brighton in 1974. I AM THEREFORE HOPING THAT JAYNE V. HENDERSON OR ONE OF HER RELATIVES WILL EVENTUALLY READ THIS MESSAGE AND REPLY HERE. Sadly, I have confirmed that Jayne's mother, Jane Olive M. Baldy, died at Brighton in Jan-Mar quarter of 1979 (her stated date of birth of 26 September 1917 confirming that she was indeed the daughter of Walter and Jane Tuffs).
Beatrice Olive: I have found a marriage in the name of Beatrice O. Tuffs to Denis F. Gregory in Oct-Dec 1941 at Surrey Mid Eastern, Surrey (Vol. No: 2A/ Page No: 743). I have also found a death in the name of Beatrice Olive Gregory in June 1993 at Daventry, Northamptonshire, with her date of birth given as 04 December 1922. I do not know if she had any children.
