John A. “Jack” Tirak, Jr.
John A. “Jack” Tirak, Jr., age 64,
a resident of Erie died Tuesday June 3, 2008 at his home. He was born April 23, 1944 in Erie the son of the late John and Rosemary Lewis Tirak. Jack graduated in 1966 from Ithaca College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Radio and Television with a minor in Political Science. He soon returned to Erie and began working for the Mitchell Advertising Agency and later with House Gwynn &Nelson Inc. as Director of Media and Research. In 1977 he helped found the Engel &Tirak Advertising Agency and was in charge of all broadcast consumer accounts, media, research, A/V production, and the agency’s computer network. Following the dissolution of the company in 1992, he later became a Senior Account Supervisor for TAL Inc. and the Sky group firms. In 1998 he was made the Western Area Operations Director for the Pa. Department of Revenue. Following his retirement in 2003, he worked as a consultant for various companies and media outlets. Jack received numerous awards and recognition for his work in advertising and was the Erie Ad Person of the Year and also received the George Mead Distinguished Career Award from the Erie Advertising Club where he had been a past president. He was frequently quoted in the media on advertising, marketing and media issues. Most recently he began a blog called “Erie Media-Go-Round” where he promoted his views on digital and high-definition television. Very active in the community, Jack had served on the following Boards; Erie Advertising Club, Erie Area Chamber of Commerce, The Achievement Center, Erie Zoological Society, National Public Broadcasting of NWPA, and the Brig Niagara League. He also served as a guest lecturer at colleges and universities and had volunteered for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Jack was a member of Erie Maennerchor Club and Victorious Missionaries.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Gregory Tirak.
Jack is survived by his wife Mary Kraus Tirak; a daughter Lita Marie Tirak of Rochester, N.Y.
and a son Kyle V. Tirak of Erie.
He is the brother of Richard (Rick) Tirak of Erie along with many nieces and nephews also surviving.
Friends are invited to call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th &Liberty St. Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. &7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in St. Luke Catholic Church. Private burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Achievement Center, 101 E. 6th St., Erie PA 16501, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 2022 E. 38th St., Erie, PA 16508 or Victorious Missionaries, 429 East Grandview Blvd. Erie, PA 16504.
