I agree with the folks at St. Marys that the portraits are probably not of Garrett and Barbara Van Swearingen. The clothing is more typical of the early 1800's, not the late 1600's. They may be portraits of early (Van) Swearingens, but they are wearing styles of clothing that did not yet exist in 1698 when Garrett died. I've been an amateur costumer for 20 years and have researched accurate clothing styles of the period, so although I'm not a professional in that field, I'm fairly sure the portraits are not Garrett and Barbara. We have a portrait from the same period of someone in my husband's family that everyone remembers only as "Uncle Doc". It's really sad how we all forget or garble information over the generations.
