I was incorrect in saying this was Edward Lee Suffern. It actually was Edward Suffern, ELS's father who was in Sacramento. Edward Suffern was born in 1810 and graduated from RPI as the first engineer in America per his word, first engineer in the world per Ripley's.

His wife Elizabeth Norton Parker Suffern died six days after the birth of their second son Edward Lee in 1845. (First son was Philip.) Edward left his little sons with his sisters-in-law and sailed around Cape Horn to California in 1849. He remained there until 1854. At first he was in the area of Murderer's Bar. While there he mined, ran a trading post, farmed large gardens to grow vegetables to sell in Sacramento. He also served as engineer for the city of Sacramento for one year - a dike he was hired to build failed in a bad flood. This information is directly from his journal.

He eventually moved to Grundy County, IL, where he married his distant cousin from Ireland, Isabella Suffern, daughter of William Suffern.
