According to birth, marriage, death and baptismal records that I have seen the line goes....Hans Steffey/Stephan, born in 1670, in Canton Bern, Switzerland. He married Elsi Graff in 1699. Their Son Johan (John) Ulrich Steffey was born on October 2, 1710 in Sunishwald, Affoltern In Emmental, Canton Bern, Switzerland. He married Anna Marie Schirmer in 1736 in Lancaster County, PA. He died April 29 1760 in PA. Their son Michael Seffey, SR. was born on November 26, 1743 in PA. He was married to Catherine Moret in Philadelphia County, PA. Michael Steffey was given land in Wythe County Virginia as payment for his services in the Rev. War. He died on Sept. 17, 1814 in Wythe County. His son Michael Steffey, JR. was born in Wythe County and died there in 1856. These records were verified by his marriage lic. and baptismal records in Wythe County. He was an elder in the St. Paul Luthern Church. He married Christina Snider on Aug. 22, 1786 in Wythe County Virginia. (I have a copy of their marriage lic.) A deed was recorded on September 13, 1782 listing and signed by Michael Steffey, JR., an elder at the church for 100 acres of unclaimed land. This land was used to build a church. Steffeys listed in the subscription list for the graveyard at St. Paul's in 1827 were Henry Steffey, JR>, Joseph Steffey, Henry Steffey, John Steffey and Peter Steffey. St. Paul's Lutheran Church is located west of the New River near Rural Retreat, VA on State Route #699. The deed can be found in Christiansburg, VA at the Montgomery County Courthouse. Michael Steffey, JR. had 9 children, on of which was John Steffey. He was born May 17, 1794 and married Mary Ann Myers on Dec. 3, 1827 in Wythe County. One of their children was John Wesley Steffey. Born on May 1, 1842 in Smith County Virginia. He married Hannah Elizabeth C. Nickles on May 2, 1866 in Scott County, VA. He was 22 and she was 17. His Occupation was listed as Farmer. He enlisted in the War Between the States, along with his brother Pleasant J. Steffey, on July 2, 1861. He was a member of the Nickelsville Spartan Band Roster, Company E-48th Virginia regiment. He was 20 years old when he enlisted. He performed detailed, hospital duties in Richmond from 4-20-1863 thru 5-8-1863. He was captured at Spotsylvania Courthouse on 5-12-1864. He was taken to POW Point Lookout on 5-18-1864 to 7-30-1864 then transferred to Elmira POW Camp on 8-2-1864 and remained until he was released on oath 6-19-1865. the the time of his release he was 5' 11", florid complexion, auburn hair, and had blue eyes. (I do have copies of his records including his marriage lic. I also have copies of personal property tax paid in Wythe and Montgomery (Old Wythe County). Most of the Steffeys lived on Reed Creek just outside Rural Retreat. John Westley Steffey had a son William "Sisco" Steffey, (my great grandfather) who had a son Leonard Monroe Steffey (my grandfather) who had 17 children, one of which was my mother Bonnie Ruth Steffey Adkins.

I hope this information is helpful, I have a lot more on different branches of the family, alone with the family crest. Copies of the church records and actual photos of some of the graves and tomestones. The family down to me left Wythe County traveled onto Wise County Virginia and then into the Pikeville Kentucky area.

I do hope that this information is helpful. Thank you
