ABINGDON--Melvin Leighton Steagall, 76, of Abingdon died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at his residence. He was a native of Abingdon who lived in Illinois until returning to Abingdon in 1986.
He served with the U.S. Marine Corps as a first corporal, Marine Division Tank Corps in World War II. He was a Mason. He was a member of the 1st Marine Division Association, China Marine Association. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Laura Leigh Steagall. He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include: His wife, Anita L. Steagall of Abingdon; three daughters, Cheryal Allen, Cindy DeWaele and Tonya Steagall, all of Illinois; three sons, Steven Steagall, Robin Steagall and Ronald Steagall, all of Illinois; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
At the request of Mr. Steagall, his body was donated to science for research and technology studies.
