James Stanley Starks, 82, of Columbus, OH, made his transition from this world on Saturday, July 21, 2012 after a short illness.
Born in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 27, 1929 to Attrice Starks and Alice Drain Starks.
Starks grew up attending the Columbus, Ohio Public Schools and kept many loyal friends, over the years, from his days at Champion Junior High School and East High School.
Having worked many years as a U.S. Postman, Starks joined the staff of the Metropolitan Housing Authority where he rose in the ranks and retired as Deputy Director on September 30, 1998. Friends and acquaintances credit him for their employment and housing opportunities. He was known as a man who did much for many.
Also an entrepreneur he owned several businesses in Columbus including Jimmy's Place and Rose's Laundromat.
He was a member of the Columbus Cavalier's Club for over 30 years, and celebrated his 80th birthday there with a surprise party given by his children in 2009.
In his retirement he played golf, traveled, and enjoyed his family. Starks was predeceased by his father Attrice Starks, mother Alice Drain Starks and brother Attrice Starks, Jr. He is survived by his children, Michael Starks and Del Starks of Columbus, Ohio, Philip Starks of Savannah, Georgia, Kathy Starks Dow of Upper Saddle River, NJ, Penny Starks of Roseland, NJ, and his baby girl, Monica Ann of Columbus.
He leaves nine grandchildren, Lisa Starks, Mona Mitchell, Bruce Starks, Alysia Starks, Joelle Dow Ballariel, Danica Dow, David Dow, Chase Starks and Joshua Starks.
His legacy spans 13 great-grandchildren living in Ohio, California and Texas and three great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are devoted nephews, Bill (Judy) Starks and Virgil (Dorothy) Starks, Gene Starks; niece, Debbie Starks Bowman; sister-in-law and good friend, Viola Starks; other 2nd generation nieces and nephews and a host of special friends and club members.
Funeral service 12Noon Friday, July 27, 2012 at the New Birth Christian Ministries, 3475 Refugee Rd. Pastor Kenneth E. Moore, Sr., officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church Friday, 10 a.m. until the start of service. Entombment in Green Lawn Cemetery.
