Donald W. Smouse
Donald W. "Duck" Smouse, 74, of West Newton, died Friday, May 13, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born Aug. 21, 1936, in West Newton, a son of the late Walter and Nellie (Trout) Smouse. Duck was an Army veteran. He was a member of St. Edward Roman Catholic Church in Herminie, and a lifetime member of the Hutchinson Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time in his garden. He loved to sit on his back deck and look over his pond telling stories and playing cards with his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Genevieve Smouse; and two brothers, William and Joseph Smouse. Duck is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Ann (Giannamore) Smouse; three sons, Donald "Ducky" Smouse and his wife, Brenda, of Lowber, John Kukonik and his fiancee, Mary Beth Locke, of West Newton, and Jason Kukonik, of Rillton; seven daughters, Sherry Hill and her husband, Mike, of Ohio, Donna Getchey and her husband, Joe, of Hutchinson, Cindy Daykon and her fiance, Jeff Denunzio, of Herminie, Diane Montini and her husband, Jim, of Irwin, Daneen Joseph and her husband, Mark, Dawn Koch and her husband, Robert, and Dana Cudnik and her husband, Michael, all of West Newton; 18 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Smouse and his wife, Marilyn, of West Newton; a sister, Alice Harvey and her husband, George, of West Newton; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Duck will be sadly missed by his family and all his friends. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the JOSEPH W. NICKELS FUNERAL HOME INC., Herminie, 724-446-7251. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Edward Roman Catholic Church, Herminie, with Father John J. Harrold as celebrant. Interment with full military honors accorded by Greensburg VFW Post 33 Honor Guard will follow in West Newton Cemetery.
