Classification: Query
Trying to locate descendants of David and Eliza Smith who came from NY to Oakland County about 1831. Oldest son, Sylvanus David Smith born NY, married in Kalamazoo Co, moved to Kansas where he died.

Ulysses was a son of David and Eliza Smith who resided in Pontiac and are buried in Oak Hill cemetery.

Ulysses (1855) married Mary J (1857) Harding (William / Willard's d. cert), Hardruf, Harden / Harder. Unable to locate marriage certificate. One record says Mary b. Pt Huron and another that she was b. Ohio. They may have met in Pt. Huron area where Ulysses brother Henry lived. Mary remarried after the death of Ulysses to Horatio G Hollister. (He has several marriages recorded on, in 1851, 1877, 1883, 1892.)

1860 census, Tyrone, Livingston Co, Michigan

Eularus, age 27
Mary J, age 26
Willard, age 6
Martha J, age 3
Frank, age 1
Jeremiah Harden or Harder, age 19, this may be related to Mary J.

The 1870 census shows them in Oxford, Oakland Co, with children Willard (1855) Martha (1857) Frank (1859) Emma (1863) Minna (1867) Charles (1870) and an Ella Wallace age 11.

Ulysses died 1877 and Mary married Horatio (HG) Hollister.

1880 census, Perry St, Pontiac, Michigan

Mary, age 48
Emma, age 17
Minnie, age 13
Charles, age 10

There is a Frank living with another family working but no documentation if this is 'ours'.

Children of Ulysses and Mary:

Willard is also shown as William in various records. He married Abbie Owen. William D Smith is buried in Oak Hill cemetery, Pontiac, on the lot of George Owen. Death cert says b. 12 Oct 1856, d. 4 Aug 1904, parents given as 'Ulsius' Smith and Mary Harding.

Birth records show Margaret M b. 2 Aug 1867 to Ulysses and Mary (L). This is probably the Minnie who was married to Lewis Phillips and had two children. Minnie died in Caro, Tuscola County. Lewis had farmed his small children Alfred and Mattie with relatives in Lapeer county, however he is with daughter Mattie (b. Dec 1891) in the 1900 Tuscola County census. Mattie married Lewis Hartman and lived and died in Fenton, Genesee County.

Martha may be the Mattie Rozelle mentioned as heir in her grandfather David Smith's estate. At that time she is in Manhattan, NY. We find no records for her.

Frank, we have no information

Emma married Charles Smith, son of Henry. They lived in Caro and Emma's sister was Minnie Phillips died there. They are buried on the same lot in Caro cemetery. Lewis Phillips, Minnie's husband died at the home of his daughter Mattie Hartman in Fenton in 1920 and was taken to Caro for burial.

Minnie see notes for her sister Emma

Charles F, we have no information

Ella Wallace found in 1870 census in the household. Ella J Wallace, age 17, b. Brockway (St Clair Co), married William E Owen, age 22, on 21 Mar 1876 at Pontiac. They moved to Caro, Tuscola County, and resided next door to her 'step father' Ulysses brother, Henry Smith, and across the street from Emma Smith Smith, her adopted sister mentioned above.

George Ruby, age 21, b. Pontiac, m. Martha A Smith, age 17, b. Pontiac, on 21 Mar 1876. Witnesses were William Smith and Ella J Wallace. ( view of image)

At the same time, William E Owen, age 22, b. Pontiac, m. Ella J Wallace, age 17, b. Brockway. Witnesses were Martha A Smith and Charles Sly. ( view of image)

The 1880 census, Caro village, Tuscola County, has William and Ella Owen, and George Ruby, age 24, 'single', boarding with them, b. Michigan, both parents b. England. (image on Ancestry)

Ella J Wallace was raised with Ulyses Smith family in Oakland County, Michigan. Martha A Smith was a daughter of Ulyses and Mary Smith. (census record)

What happened to Martha / Matty / Mattie Smith Ruby between 1876 and 1880? Is this the same Mattie Rozell named in her grandfather's will?
