"John SMICKER, 82, former Hotel Traylor part-owner

John SMICKER, 82, of Allentown, a former part-owner of the Hotel Traylor, Allentown, died Wednesday, July 3, in his home. He was the husband of Catherine (MARHON) SMICKER. They were married 62 years last October.

He was part-owner and manager of Hotel Traylor, Allentown, for many years.

SMICKER began his career in the hotel business as a dishwasher and apprentice chef at the Strand Restaurant, Allentown, 1929-37. He served as first cook at the Avondale Restaurant, 1937-39, and was owner operator of the Highway and Hibernia restaurants, Allentown, 1938-42.

He was chef at Hess Lehigh Farms Restaurant, Allentown, 1946-48 and executive chef at the Lehigh Valley Shrine Club, 1948-51.

After the Shrine Club he signed on the Hotel Traylor and became general manager in 1958 and a vice president in 1967.

Born in Shenandoah, Schuylkill County, he was a son of the late Paul and Pauline (NACISZE) SMICKER.

He was a member of St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Allentown.

A Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater and Iwo Jima.

An avid boater and outspoken advocate for the restoration of the Lehigh Canal and the city's Lehigh River waterfront, he was a past director of the Lehigh River Restoration Association.

SMICKER was a past coordinator of the Lehigh River Division of the Pennsylvania Pleasure Boat Association and a former president of the PPBA which he helped found. He was also a past director of water resources committee of the Allentown Chamber of Commerce.

He was a commodore, and served as president for more than 10 terms until 1972, of the G. Henry Frick Boating Club, Allentown.

He was a former member of the advisory committee of the Governor's Commission on Water Safety.

He served as a member of the Pennsylvania Hotel and Lehigh Valley Restaurant associations and was a former treasurer of the Lehigh Valley Hotel Corp.

SMICKER was a past vice president of the Clover Club Inc., and former official of the Lehigh Development Corp., and served on the executive committee of the Allentown-Lehigh County Tourist and Convention Bureau.

In 1971 he received an award from the 1st and 6th Ward, Old Timers Association, for his work with the Lehigh River Day program.

Survivors: Wife, sons, John Jr. of Allentown, and Col. Thomas in Virginia; daughters, Shirley, wife of Robert HUNSICKER of Princeton, N.J., Gail of Jim Thorpe, Linda, wife of William MICKLOS of Fogelsville; brother, Adam of Catasauqua; sisters, Mary MIZGERD of Northampton and Eva of Allentown; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Kohut Funeral Home, 950 N. Front St., Allentown; Divine Liturgy at 11 a.m. in the church. Call 9:30 a.m. Friday.
