I plainly see it this way. There was no Ireland at this time period. All the Irish characters are to be found in Kent County, Maryland. James SKAGGS being born on Open Waters is probably an old family story with no foundation to it. He was clearly the son of Richard SKAGGS and Mary THEAR/KEAR. He was probably born on the Land Mary THEAR rented to her son. All the Irish stories about Richard and Thomas SKAGGS were just stories. Richard SKAGGS was born 1674 according to my notes in Kent County, Maryland. What do you think of my conclusion?

John Hatch was a member of the Maryland Assembly, a member of the Governor's Council and a member of

In 1657, John Hatch was a tax collector. In 1660, he took part in the Puritan rebellion led by Josias Fendall.
As a result, he was taken in custody, under threat of banishment.

Kent County, Maryland was formed from St. Mary's in 1642. In 1659, Baltimore County was created from
parts of Ann Arundel, Kent and unorganized territory. In 1662, Talbot was created from Kent, and in 1666,
Somerset from non-county area. In 1671, Kent gained substantially from Talbot, and in 1696, Kent and
Talbot exchanged lands.

William SKAGGS (SCAGGS, STAGG, Or SKAG) was a ship Captain who sailed to and from the colonies
in the mid 1600's. George SKEGG and William SKEGG were both listed on the same page in the index, but
they had been sentenced to "transportation, T/53/40 page 337-8." (We can surmise they were not sentenced
at the same time.) Both George and William were sentenced to Hertford Prison and their destination on the
Speedwell and Mediterranean was Maryland. The captains of their ship were William CAMPLIN and
George HARRIOT, whom I noted had made various voyages with other ships as Captains...He was
transported to the America in 1666. May have had sons named John, Henry, James & Charles SKAGGS.
County: DEVON. (Taken from "The Original Lists of Emigrants in Bondage" from London to the American
Colonies 1719-1744, Edited and with introduction by Marion and Jack Kaminkow, Published by Magna
Carta book Co. Baltimore, Maryland 21215.)

Nothing further has been learned of the above William SKAGGS--either in Kent or in Devonshire, England.

Page 48: From "BIG SANDY SKAGGS"
First Progenitor: William Skaggs (Skaggs, Stagg, Skag)... had license to sail to and from the Colonies int he
Second Progenitor: Thomas Skaggs and Ann Wollard
As I stood by old Thomas' grave near the beautiful New River, Virginia (now West Virginia), I thought of
all the generations that have lived in this great land of ours after our foreparents arrived from Londonderry,
Ireland and perhaps Germany by way of London, England. My mind wandered back to Cambridge, England
where Thomas and Ann were married in late autumn in Cambridge, England--Oct. 31, 1734 at St.
Sepulcher's... Old Thomas and Ann, whose descendants were destined to become the famous "Long Hunters
of Kentucky"
