Arthur Dale Shumate Sr.

WEIRTON — Arthur Dale Shumate Sr., 89, of Weirton, died Monday, April 21, 2008 at his home.

Born on Sept. 18, 1918 at Elgood, he was the son of the late Elizabeth Maude White Shumate and the late George Rufus Shumate.

He was a member of Paris Presbyterian Church, a U.S. Navy World War II veteran, a charter member of Colliers Sportsmen Club, and a 25 year club member at Weirton Steel Company and a member of the Weirton Steel and Federal Bowling Leagues. He was retired from the Mason Gang of Weirton Steel Corp.

He was raised by his grandparents Samuel Patton White and Ollie Steele White.

In addition to his parents and grandparents, he was a preceded in death by his stepmother Elsie White Shumate; brothers, Aubrey, Allen, Fred, Blake, Lake and Donzie White and Wallace “Bud” Shumate; son, Terry Lee Shumate; sisters, Lottie White, Christie Kennedy, Roda Holdren, Chippie Ferguson and Louise Harris.

He is survived by his wife Geneva Judge Shumate; daughter, Debbie Castaneda (Alex) of Ocala, Fla.; sons, Arthur Shumate Jr., of Weirton, Ronald Shumate (Lisa) of Pinewood Springs, Colo., Jerry Shumate (Katherine) of Weirton; sisters, Wanda Sardelli of Boliver, Ohio and Polly Wheeler of Powhatan, Va.; nine grandchildren, Allison and Staci Shumate, Rickie and Michael Casteneda, Dale Shumate, Elisa Reihing (Matt), Skylar and Sage Shumate and Lucretia Shumate; one great-grandchild, Kaydin Riehing.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 24, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Paris Presbyterian Church, Paris, Pa., with the Rev. Christina Hosler officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling.

Friends may call at from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Steel & Wolfe Funeral Home Inc., 380 Penco Road, Weirton.
