What census or reference did you find Gideon living back with Arza Searl? Yes, the Gideon I found the letter from to his cousin Napoleon Searl in Steele Co. MN is a son of Arza Searl, b. 8 Sept 1802 in Whitehall, Washington Co. NY and died in 1884 in Great Valley, Cattaraugus Co. NY. THIS Gideon (there are about 8 in my database) was born around 1830 and then in 1856 he married Laura Star. They moved 1858 to Kelso, Sibley Co. MN. Steven W. Searl, their first son was born 8 Aug 1858 in Kelso, Sibley Co. MN. He died 19 Dec 1862 in St. Peter, Nicollet Co. MN. I found a clipping inside a ledger of Napoleon Searl that has:
DIED
In St. Peters, Minnesota, on teh 19th of Decemeber 1862, STEPHEN W. only son of Gideon and Laura Searl, age 4 years, 4 months and 11 days.

Then they had Frank Searl ca. 1869 in St. Peter, Nicollet Co. MN. I'm not sure where Ralph was born around 1870, but the letter from Gideon Searl was written to Napoleon 25 May 1873, from Ellicottville, Cattraugus Co. NY. Laura (Star) Searl died 20 Dec 1893 in Ellicottville and then Gideon died 12 Dec 1899 in Ellicottville as well. I'm not sure how much of this old string of messages you read, but this is Gideon's obituary:

=========
Gideon SEARL, aged 69, died at the residence of his son, Frank, in Ellicotville Tuesday Dec. 12th, of Pneumonia, after one week's illness.

Mr. SEARL was born in Great Valley. In 1858 he removed to Minnesota. He moved back to Great Valley in 1872. In 1856 he married Miss Laura STARR of Humphrey, who died Dec. 20, 1893. Two children survive him, Frank of Ellicotville and Ralph of Great Valley, one brother, Alonzo of Ellicotville and one sister Mrs. Amy BLIGHTON of Delevan.

His father, Arza SEARL, came to Cattaraugus county with four brothers in 1821. Deceased was a charter member of the A.O.U.W.
(Newspaper clipping - probably Olean Democrat -1899)
========
I'm not sure which tombstones of Searl(es) you are looking for? Are you looking for the Gideon who was the Revolutionary War Soldier? That would have been Arza's father Gideon Searl, Jr. b. 11 March 1762 in Arlington, Bennington Co. VT and died 26 Sept 1830 in Whitehall, Washington Co. NY. He is buried in Whitehall Cemetery, Washington Co. NY.

I'm not sure if I can help, but if I can let me know.
