Devon/Dorset Scadden's (Scaddings)

Classification: Query
Surnames: Scadden, Scadding, Scaddinge
My name is Edie Scadden and I live in sunny Auckland New Zealand (first country to see the New Year).
Have recently located an Irish Scadden Coat of arms posted on the pages? Have also located a Scottish family crest which appears to be from around the 1200's (could be wrong about the date).

I also have reason to believe that the Scaddens held estates and were allied to influential families in the Scottish English border ridings circa 11th century and further back had ancestral roots among the Strathclyde britons, who were defeated by the vikings in the late 800's. My father has always suspected that the Scaddens were descended from these vikings and that the name Scadden is actually an anglesization of 'Sigurdsen'. However I have not been able to locate any evidence of this.

Does anyone know who the Scadden could have been who earned the right to carry a crest?

My particular branch of the Scadden's are descended from George William Chard Scadden and Elizabeth Hodges, who emigrated to New Zealand in 1873 aboard the Forfarshire.George William and Elizabeth are buried in Masterton cemetary in the Wairarapa, as is his sister Eliza and her husband John Butcher. George William is descended from the Devon and Dorset Scaddens and his ancestry has been traced back to John Scaddinge (Scadding, Scadden) who was born in the mid-1500's and resided in Hemyock, Devon.

My great grandparents were William John Alexander Forfarshire Fox Scadden (buried at Patea, Taranaki) and Margaret O'Brien. It appears that he was brought out to NZ on the Forfarshire under the command of Captain Fox as a babe in arms. I am unsure when the names Forfarshire and Fox were added to his, but all NZ records which have been unearthed list all five christian names.

My grandparents John Patrick Noel (Jack) Scadden and Agnes Maud (daughter of Harry Maud) who married at Wellington NZ in 1926 had three sons, my father being the eldest of these sons - Maxwell John Scadden, who currently resides at Masterton in the Wairarapa. The lineage can be confusing at this point as Dad holds the dubious honour of being married three times and has one son, Brian to his first wife (Joan Ellen Jessie Ellis), two daughters (myself the eldest) Edith and Ruth to wife number 2 (Mary Reaston), and currently is married to Alberta Paku with whom he has another 2 sons - Luke Wiremu John Scadden and Gregory Dean Scadden.

I have a collection of many photographs of this branch of the Scaddens dating as far back as George William and Elizabeth and details of the complete tree from William John Alexander Forfarshire Fox Scadden and Margaret O'Brien.
