I understand that my surname is English, but beyond that I haven't a clue.

Does anyone have information to that end. I understand that many English surnames
refer to a place or occupation (e.g. Sawyer) but no one has offered me a plausible
explanation as to the origin of the name itself.

Any help would be appreciated.
