Janet Elizabeth (Roof) Laue

SARASOTA, FL: Janet Elizabeth (Roof) Laue passed on peacefully, in the early morning of the 19th of December, 2011.
The enrichment of family, friends, and professionals keynotes the life of Janet Elizabeth Roof. Riley and Louise Roof celebrated the birth of their daughter Janet on November 19, 1921 in Newark, Ohio. (Licking County)

As graduate of Newark High School in 1939 with honors and recipient of the French Prize, it became obvious she would seek the challenges of college and urban life.

Miss Roof was encouraged by grandmother Taylor to attend a seamstress school in Chicago.
After 6 months she returned to Newark and worked at Carol's Department store and Owens Corning to earn money for attending OSU.
Janet often made her own clothing. Janet's dreams began with entry to Ohio State University in Columbus. Her parents encouraged this opportunity.
She joined the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and entered OSU's Fisher College of Business.
Janet Roof graduated cum laude from OSU in 1945, and was encouraged by professor Nolan to contact Jean Despres, executive of Coty, Inc (cosmetics & fragrance), upon reaching New York City. Miss Roof was immediately employed by world famous Lilly Dache, milliner, fashion designer, and wife of Mr Despres. There she met Christian Dior, Oleg Cassini, Truman Capote, and Edith Head who shared the care concerning the quality of fabrics and line of a garment.

While working in Manhattan she met and married Webb Franklin Laue, a retired Naval officer and business man. Their pride and joy was their daughter, Louisa Laue, who despite having cystic fibrosis, graduated with honors from NYU in medicine, at an early age. Louisa became professor at Georgetown University and pioneered research in pediatrics, with publication in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Janet moved from milliner to the corporate world of Eastman Kodak. She rose to the position of VP in Eastman Chemical Products and after 30 years retired as Marketing Manager. She is a woman of extraordinary achievement for that time in the United States.

Janet and Webb then retired to Sarasota, Florida where Janet became active with the Asolo Theatre Guild.

Webb passed on December 22, 1992. Later Janet married William Curry, a retired military officer and business man. Bill Curry died November 20, 2001.

Janet Laue remained active in Daughters of the American Revolution and The Asolo. Her contributions, sharp mind, many, many interesting stories, and laughter will be missed by all.

She is survived by her sister, Eileen Watson of La Jolla, CA; brother, Robert Eugene Roof of Sun City West, Arizona; Ellen Niemi of Lakewood Ranch, Florida, and Polly Taylor Jones, Tierra Verde, FL.
