HERMITAGE, PA. – A funeral service celebrating the life of Mr. Benjamin “Bennie” F. Porter Jr. will be held Saturday at noon at the Valley Baptist Church.
Mr. Porter departed this life April 16, 2013, at Sharon Regional Hospital.
Mr. Porter was born Nov. 15, 1933, in Sharon, Pa., a son of Benjamin and Utha Belle Porter Sr.
He attended Sharon Area High School, where he participated in the football programs. He later graduated from the Barber Institute in Pittsburgh, and was licensed in the State of Pennsylvania.
He was the owner and operator of Porter’s Barber Shop for over 50 years.
Mr. Porter was a member of the U.S. Army, proudly serving during the Korean War.
He was formerly employed with Shenango Furnace Mill and General Motors in Lordstown, Ohio for 42 years, retiring in 2006.
He was a lifelong member of Ruth AME Zion Church and former member of the Masonic Order.
Mr. Porter’s love for sports was only surpassed by his love of fishing and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was the ultimate host to everyone who graced his home with their presence.
He will be sadly missed by his family, neighbors, and friends.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 55 years, the former LaVerne “Bunnie” Culp; two daughters, Jacqueline J. Cruz and Phyllis “Fee Fee” White; his son, Benjamin “Stuff” Porter III; five grandsons, who were raised like his own, Jeffrey T. Porter, Marcus A. Horvath, Julio Cruz Jr., Rico Cruz, and Terrence W. White; two granddaughters, Macy Horvath and Selena Brandt; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Francina Sanders of Youngstown, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends .
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Fannie B. McCoy.
The family will receive friends Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Washington Funeral Home and Saturday, one hour prior to services at the church.
Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery.
