MUSCATINE, Iowa - Reverend Leif A. Pohl, 64, of Muscatine, died Saturday, May 28, 2005, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Memorial Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 2, 2005, at Grace Lutheran Church, 2107 Cedar Street, Muscatine. Bishop Phillip Hougen, former Bishop Paul Werger, Pastor Don Sondrol, Chaplains Cindy Breed, Martha Lang and Vicki Pedersen will co-officiate.

The family will meet with friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Per his wishes, his body has been cremated. The Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Lutheran Chaplaincy Outreach at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, the Grace Lutheran Church Renovation Fund and the family asks that people donate blood in Leif's honor.

Pastor Leif A. Pohl was born on September 22, 1940, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Neil A. Pohl and Frieda Radtke Pohl. He married Janice J. Forsyth on May 28, 1966, at Grace Lutheran Church, Des Moines, Iowa.

Leif was a graduate of Brookfield High School, Brookfield, Wisconsin, in 1958. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Botany in 1962, from the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado. He attended Maywood Seminary in Maywood, Illinois from 1962 to 1966. During his third year of seminary, he interned at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Des Moines. He graduated from Maywood Seminary on May 19, 1966, with a Masters of Divinity.

He was ordained to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament in the Lutheran Church of America on June 12, 1966, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He served as an associate pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Muncie, Indiana, and part-time campus pastor at Ball State University from June 1966 until March 1969. He served as pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, Owensboro, Kentucky, from March 1969 until March 1976. He served as pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church in South Haven (Valparaiso), Indiana, from March 1976 through July 1985. He has served as pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, Muscatine, Iowa, from August 1, 1985, until his death, May 28, 2005.

He was Dean of Conference No 7 (Iowa City area) of the Southeast Iowa Synod of ELCA for the past two years. He was an active member of the Muscatine Ministerial Association. He is a past board member of the Commission on Aging, now known as Senior Resources. He served as Chaplain of Unity Hospice. He was serving on the board of Lutheran Chaplaincy Outreach for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He was a regular donor to the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Janice J. Pohl of Muscatine; three sons, Eric A. Pohl and wife, Christy, of Rock Island, Illinois, twin sons, Andrew J. Pohl and wife, Cassandra, of Troy, Ohio, and Thomas J. Pohl and wife, Christina, of Urbandale; one daughter, Jennifer L. Pohl-Staack of Urbandale, and her special friend, Nathan J. Carlson; nine grandchildren, Devin G. Staack, Christian T. Staack, Sean A. Pohl, twins, Matthew L. and William A. Pohl, Catelyn E. Pohl, Neil A. Pohl, Megan E. Pohl, and Joshua J. Pohl; and two sisters, Merry Lobrecht and husband, Richard, of Kingwood, Texas, and K.C. Lobrecht and husband, David, of Mounds, Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Nancy Mallett.
SILVIS, Ill. -- Jon R. Pohl Sr., 62, of Silvis died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, at Trinity West Hospital in Rock Island, Ill.

Services were today at Runge Mortuary Chapel in Davenport. Burial was at Fairmount Cemetery in Davenport.

Mr. Pohl was born on March 18, 1939, in Davenport, the son of Robert and Marjorie Nolan Pohl. He married Patricia Phillips on July 26, 1958, in Muscatine. She preceded him in death in April 1994. He later married Janice McCarthy on Sept. 1, 2000.

He was employed at International Harvester/Farmall, now Navistar Rock Island, for 30 years, retiring in 1995.

Survivors include his wife, Janice; two sons, Randy Pohl of Davenport and Jon Pohl Jr. of Moline, Ill.; stepsons, Larry McCarthy of Springfield, Ill., Michael McCarthy Jr. of Santa Clara, Calif. and Patrick McCarthy of Milan, Ill.; two daughters, Luanne Archer and Brenda Bates, both of Davenport; stepdaughters, Kelley Howard of Mechanicsburg, Ill. and Melissa Davila of Rock Island, Ill.; 18 grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Carole Williams of East Moline, Ill.; and a brother, Scott Pohl of Davenport.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia; an infant son, Robert; and a sister, Connie.
