MORNING SUN, Iowa -- Nancy Ann Peters Pierce, 74, Morning Sun, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at home as a result of ovarian cancer.

Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Morning Sun.

A memorial fund has been established for the Iowa City Hospice, Mellinger Memorial Library, First United Presbyterian Church Hearing Impaired Services and Louisa County Public Health.

Mrs. Pierce was born Oct. 5, 1930, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of George Oliver and Eleanor Elizabeth Peters. She married Leroy K. Pierce Oct. 4, 1952.

Her family moved to Monmouth, Ill., when she was a freshman in high school. She graduated from Monmouth High School and attended Monmouth College where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi. She began nursing school at the University of Cincinnati finishing her nursing degree in 1952 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, Ill.

After her marriage, she moved to Morning Sun.

Her nursing career included serving as school nurse for Morning Sun Community School. She started the Louisa County Public Health Nursing Service and served as nurse/administrator at the agency from 1967 until her retirement in 1992.

She was a member of First United Presbyterian Church, Morning Sun, where she was a deacon and choir member. She was past president of Chapter ET of PEO, past president of Sorosis, and a member of the Garden Club. For many years she was a den mother in Cub Scouts Pack 67.

She was an accomplished vocalist, singing solos, as well as in duets, trios, quartets and choirs.
Gardening was a favorite hobby of hers, exemplified by her perennial flower and water garden. She enjoyed her grandchildren and all their activities. Bicycling was also a favorite sport and twice she rode on RABRAI.

She held her brand new great-grandson, Ethan Pierce, last weekend when he was 1-week-old,

Survivors include her husband; three sons, David and wife Carol of Morning Sun, Dwight and wife Barbie of Conway, Ark., and Curtis and wife Linda of Columbus Junction; grandchildren, Cole and Melissa Pierce of Chicago, Tiffany Pierce of Broomfield, Colo., Jared Pierce of Linfield College, Ore., Livia and Sam Pierce of Conway, Justin and Rachel Pierce of Columbus Junction; a great-grandson, Ethan Pierce; two brothers, Robert Peters and wife Marilyn of El Dorado Hills, Calif., and Richard Peters and wife Patty of Woodstock, Ill.; one niece; three nephews; and a sister-in-law, Charlotte Pierce Gibson of Morning Sun.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two grandchildren.
SHOW LOW, Ariz. -- John Harold Pierce, 41, of Show Low, formerly of Muscatine and Wapello, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at his home.

Graveside services are pending and will be held at the Edwards Cemetery in Oakville. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello.

Mr. Pierce was born July 25, 1959, in Lake Charles, La., the son of Carl and Geraldine Housh Pierce.

He served in the U.S. Army and worked at the IBP plant in Columbus Junction.

Survivors include his mother, Geraldine Pierce of Quitman, Ark.; a sister, Ann Heitmeier of Mediapolis; three brothers, Bill Pierce of Wapello, Mike Pierce of Keokuk, and Dave Pierce of Quitman, Ark.; several nieces and nephews; and a daughter Patriah Pierce.

He was preceded in death by his father.
ATALISSA, Iowa -- Charles Wayne Pierce, 51, Atalissa, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, after a short illness.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Church United, West Liberty. The Rev. Al Zimmerman will officiate. Burial will be at North Prairie Cemetery, West Liberty.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at the Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty.

Mr. Pierce was born on Sept. 21, 1950, in Iowa City, the son of Charles Fred and Carmen Hope Markham Pierce.

He graduated from West Liberty High School in 1968 and Scott Community College with an associate degree in engineering.

He was a Quality Control Technician with Williamsburg Manufacturing.

He was a member of First Church United.

Survivors include his wife, Cinda Pierce of Atalissa; a son, Nathan Pierce and his wife, Michelle, of Prophetstown, Ill.; a daughter, Jessica Pierce of Muscatine; two grandchildren, Madison and Nicholas; his mother, Hope Pierce of West Liberty; and a brother, Richard Moyer of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his father.
ROCHESTER, Iowa -- Margaret Lucille Pierce, 78, Rochester, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at her home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Fry Funeral Home, Tipton. The Rev. Ron Lashmit will officiate. Burial will be at Rochester Cemetery, Rochester.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Pierce was born on April 18, 1924, in Conesville, the daughter of Alfred and Lillian Burr Morgan. She married Robert Pierce on June 18, 1942, in Tipton.

She attended Cedar County schools.

She was employed as a nurse's aid.

She was a member of Rochester United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Deanna Gritton and her husband, Darrell, of Rochester; three grandchildren, Roger Gritton and his wife, Carolyn, of Rochester and Crystal Harden and her husband, Henry, and Rick Gritton and his wife, Joanne, all of Tipton; four great-grandchildren, Morgan and Chandler Harden and Taylor and Spencer Gritton; and a sister, Silvia McQuillin of Tipton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, James Morgan; sisters, Elsie Lange, Viola Albin, Ruby Christian, Ruth Motz and Orf Maurer and two infant sisters.
WEST BRANCH, Iowa -- Mearl 'Shorty' A. Pierce, 89, formerly of West Branch, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, at the Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

After the visitation, there will be private family services at the funeral home and graveside. Burial will be at West Branch Cemetery.

Mr. Pierce was born Aug. 15, 1915, in Clarence, Iowa, the son of Will and Valetta Mae Long Pierce. He married Esther Loanna Hansen on Feb. 3, 1938, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa.

He grew up in the Tipton area, attending Cedar County Country Schools grades 1-8 and later Tipton High School.

He retired from Hartwig Motors in 1980.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Jeanne Kenney and husband, Kenneth, and Joanne Parizek; a son, Warren Pierce; a brother, Harold Pierce; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Donna Appleglise; a son-in-law, Jim Parizek; a grandson, Denny; one brother; and two sisters.
MEDIAPOLIS, Iowa - Michael Carl Pierce, 55, a resident of the Mediapolis Care Facility, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2007, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Graveside Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, September 2, 2007, at the Edwards Cemetery, Oakville. The Rev. Sue-Ellen Sherman will officiate. A luncheon will follow at the home of Ann Heitmeier in Mediapolis.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the new Mediapolis swimming pool.
The Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pierce was born September 28, 1951, in Leonard, Texas, the son of Carl and Geraldine Housh Pierce.

As a young man, he worked at the Oakville Feed and Grain.

He had some very special abilities, even with him being mentally challenged. He was proud to be a Texan, played the saxophone and was the only one in the family with the ability to sing.

He loved to draw and swim and was a huge fan of Harry Potter.

He enjoyed Boy Scouts and was a scout helper while he lived in Beatrice, Nebraska. He loved and enjoyed his nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his mother; his sister, Ann Heitmeier and her husband, Owen, of Mediapolis; two brothers, Dave Pierce and his wife, Julie, of Rosebud, Arkansas, and Bill Pierce and his wife, Connie, of Wapello; nieces and nephews, Nikki, Daylene, Charlene, Fritz Runnells, Dan Runnells, Sandie and Bridget.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father; and a brother, John.
