Classification: Query
Surnames: Phillips
John Phillips was born in Cecil County, Md., on May 7, 1734, and died about March 1833 in Christian County, Kentucky. About 1770, John married Margaret McReadon (1748-1812) in Lancaster County, Pa. Margaret died in Obion County, Tenn.

According to John’s pension application, he moved to Frederick County as a youth, then to Rowan County, North Carolina. Frederick County, west of Cecil County and south of Lancaster County, was created in 1748 from Baltimore and Prince George's counties. Cecil County, Frederick County, and Lancaster County are in the same general area.

John and Margaret had seven children, including Nathan Phillips, my third-great-grandfather, who was born on Mar. 20, 1773, in Lancaster County, Pa., and died on Mar. 5, 1844, in Cabarrus County, N.C. Nathan married Hannah Jane Rounceval, a native of Rowan County, N.C., on Aug. 12, 1802.

There were several Phillips families in the same parts of Maryland and Pennsylvania at the same times, but we have no confirmed information on the parents of John Phillips. Possible clues include the Maryland Early Census Index for 1740, which shows a Rubin Phillips, a Cpl. Thomas Phillips, and a William Phillips in Cecil County, as well as a Cpl. John Phillips in the Militia Foot Company there.

Any specific information on the ancestors of John Phillips (1734-1833) would be appreciated.
