I have identified my great grandmother, who was Josephine or Johanna (she used both names) and three of her siblings. The family story is that they were all born in Co. Waterford, that there were 10 siblings in total, that after the death of their father they and their widowed mother came to America, and that their mother returned three times to Ireland to try to claim land belonging to her late husband and died and was buried at sea on the third return. What I have is as follows:
Mary J Phelan born in 1835 (date calculated from age at death), said she arrived in 1851 (according to 1900 census) and married Robert P. KORNER in Sandusky Co., OH on 15 Aug 1855. She had seven children: Mary, Julia, Katherine (Katie), Nellie, John, Robert Lee (or Robert Leo), and Susie. Mary died 29 Apr 1907 in Bellevue, OH.
James Phelan born about 1839, fought with an Ohio regiment in the Civil War, died on 16 Nov 1870 in Bellevue, OH and is buried there. As far as I can determine he never married.
Josephine Rebecca Phelan (also known as Johanna Phelan), born 24 Jun 1841 in Waterford, Co., Waterford. I have possible baptismal record of a Johanna Phelan (a name she sometimes used) for 4 Jul 1841 that lists her parents as James Phelan and Mary MAHAR. Two records have her emigrating in 1852 or 1854. By 1867 she was living in Fleet Rock, OH. She married Charles Theodore SMITH 1 Jan 1868 in Hillsdale, MI. She had four children: Frank b. 1870 in Indiana, died young; Frederick Ames SMITH born 1872 in Bellevue, Courtland James SMITH born 1876 in Bellevue and Frances Louise (Lutie) Smith born 1877. She divorced Charles in 1891 and later lived with (can't find marriage record) Augustus MURPHY in Minnesota. She died 27 Jan 1933 in Minneapolis. She appears as Johanna on the baptism record and also on the baptism record of her son Frederick Ames Smith and in the divorce proceedings. Elsewhere she is referred to as Josephine. I'm afraid she was much given to lying about her age and also claiming she was born in England, not Ireland.
Dora Phelan born either 1851, 1853 or 1855 in Ireland. 1920 census has her immigration year as 1857 but I have been unable to find the family arrivals in shipping or immigration records. She married George THEYSON in 1884 and they lived in LaCrosse, WI before moving to Minneapolis, MN about 1904/5. They never had children. Dora died 19 Oct 1920 in Minneapolis.
I would dearly love to find any of the other six siblings and confirm the names of the parents so that I can trace them in Irish records. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
